There was a time when healthcare providers and scientists said that if we have the genes, we will eventually get the disease.
THAT HAS CHANGED!
Science now knows that although we cannot change our genes, we can control how the genes express themselves by our daily behaviors, or our lifestyle. This newer science is called epigenetics.
Lifestyle concept includes different factors such as sleep, exercise, diet, behavior, stress, working habits, smoking and alcohol consumption. “Individual genetic background and environmental factors are intertwined to lifestyle in determining the health status of individuals”.
THE THINGS YOU DO, CAN TURN ON OR TURN OFF GENE EXPRESSION
So even though you may have the genetic factors to indicate you are susceptible to say, cardiovascular disease, the things you do (or don’t do) on a daily basis can turn on, or turn off the expression of the genes of cardiovascular disease.
