Learning New Things Blog Nicole Vienneau MSN, RN, NC-BC Health Protection Expert and Head Motivator

I am certain you’ve heard the saying, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Well I am here to tell you that is simply NOT true, and it is imperative for your health and wellbeing that you continue to learn new things, otherwise you become an old, stinky dog… LOL!

Learning New Things

Seriously, learning new things like, a new language, playing the guitar or taking up drawing can strengthen the connections between your brain’s nerve cells. Even participating in leisure activities like reading books, a trip to a museum, & writing letters protect your brain from amyloid protein buildup. Keeping your brain engaged by learning new things even improves your memory- and who doesn’t want to remember where they put the keys?!

I’ve taken the Advice to learn New things

I’ve taken the advice to learn new things to heart and have begun the journey to learn the sport of mountain biking!

My husband Patrick is an avid mountain biker and has been secretly and overtly wishing I’d take up the sport, but for many years I kept thinking the risk outweighed the benefit of a broken pelvis or brain injury.

COVID made me rethink

But COVID made me rethink my ways of being, and doing, and one masked day we stopped at the mountain bike store to ‘get Patrick a new inner tube’…

And out I rode with a brand new mountain bike! Holy moly! Look out world, I’m gonna crash!

The lesson is…

The lesson is, I love learning new things. Am I good at it? Not really. But I am learning, and with learning comes new growth and opportunities!

My Brain and Body are Healthier and Happier

My brain and body are healthier and happier and my relationship with my husband has become stronger since we both exhibit similar bruises and stories of nature, hills, and laughter.

This old gal is learning new things… next up? The ukulele.

What have you learned lately? How has it enhanced your health and life? What are you thinking of learning? Drop a comment below, because we can all learn a new thing or two, and you may inspire someone else to try something new.

xo you are loved, Nicole
