What am I hoping for?

Hope. Hope never denies us our emotions of anger, grief, anxiety, fear or sadness, instead, hope allows us to direct our feelings, thoughts and actions to more focused possibilities.

Energy is Renewed and Possibilities Unfold

When one has hope, or finds hope, one’s energy is renewed and possibilities unfold. If one feels hopeless, energy and possibilities are lost. In the book Transpersonal Development: Cultivating the Human resources of Peace, Wisdom, Purpose and Oneness, Bonney and Richard Schaub from Huntington Meditation and Imagery note that when we link our minds’ energy to hope we can support our central nervous system to lift any feelings of depression and hopelessness. This is powerful for ourselves, and for our Nurse Coaching clients and patients!

Awaken the Deep Connections to Inner Wisdom

I use awareness practices in my group and individual Nurse Coaching sessions to help awaken the deep connections we each have to our inner wisdom. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we (or our clients) can lose sight of and/or contact with our internal knowledge, experience and knowing. Spending a few precious moments re-acquainting with one’s self is all one needs to get un-stuck, move forward, or create an energy shift.

It is with these intentions, I share one of my favorite awareness practices which simply asks the question, “What am I hoping for”.

I wrote a script you can use (or print) below…. but sometimes it’s best to try the awareness practice yourself a few times to see what comes up for you, and how you respond, so click the video below to experience the, “what am I hoping for?” awareness practice.

I’d love to hear what transpired for you, and how you use this awareness practice in your Nurse Coaching sessions, or for yourself.

What Am I Hoping For Script (loosely adapted from Schaub & Schaub, 2015)

  1. Allow your body to settle, if you can, rest against something that supports you... Let it hold you. If you feel comfortable, close or soften your eyes…

  2. Bring attention to your breathing…no need to change it, just let it be the way it is…notice it…

  3. In a moment, I’ll ask you a question to ask yourself in your mind. Try not to think real hard about the answer. Just let whatever comes to you, come…if nothing comes, it’s ok…just return to noticing your breath…

  4. Now, ask yourself this question, be open to what comes to you… Here is the question, ““In my life right now, what am I hoping for?” “In my life right now, what am I hoping for?”

  5. Pause in silence for ~ 90-120 seconds.

  6. And now, let go of this practice and bring your attention to notice how you are…

  7. Wait 30 seconds and then say, “And when you feel ready, at your pace, return to the space together feeling refreshed and alert.”
